Junior Data Scientist to work in Big Data team

Over the past three years the Big Data team has developed new capability in data science through practical pilot projects and by engaging and collaborating with key stakeholders. The innovative pilot projects have delivered prototypes and new techniques.

You will have the opportunity to work with the latest open-source data science platforms exploring ways to improve the organisation through data science methods,

Position Holder Responsibilities:

As a data scientist you will lead a proof-of-concept project to improve statistical processing and quality assurance associated with one of our regular releases. Specifically, you will develop an analytical pipeline using open-source software to replace existing statistical processes. This will involve working closely with customers within the organisation to gather requirements, iteratively developing a prototype solution, and help with up-skilling users. The work of the team is fluid, and you may assist or lead on other data science projects as required.

Relevant Skills and Experience

- Knowledge and experience of both R and Python programming languages. Experience of other programming languages, including VBA, would be an advantage.
- Knowledge and experience of good programming practice including the use of version control software, unit testing.
- Knowledge of a range of statistical or data science techniques, ideally having applied these in a business context
- Experience in manipulation and analysis of data and presenting research results
- Broader skills to include:
- Ability to build relationships with others across organisational boundaries
- Ability to work effectively both independently, with minimal supervision, and within a small team
- Problem solving skills
- Written and verbal communication skills, with ideally an experience of a range of formats and audiences.

Qualifications

- A degree in a numerate subject such as computer science, statistics, data science, mathematics or physics is essential.
