We are looking for an outstanding person to lead our new Communications Team to engage our audiences, build our influence, and project our brand and organisational offering to win them over to UP’s vision of harnessing disruptive innovation to empower poor communities around the world. We need someone to manage the Communications Team and budget to develop and deliver communications plans across media/PR, digital communications, public affairs, marketing, sales, brand, events management, publications and advocacy across UP’s Wales, UK and international target audiences. They will work closely with the Head of Fundraising and fundraising team to support income generation objectives through communications. The postholder will lead on deepening and projecting UP’s new brand positioning around disruptive innovation, community empowerment and intelligent development with key target audiences. This will include building and delivering a strategy to support UP’s country offices and programmes (and organisations merged into the UP group) to project the UP brand to support both overall organisational objectives and local / programme specific ones. They will manage liaison across UP teams and country programmes to project strong, consistent and vibrant communication of UP’s messages and work, including support for UP’s country programme teams in the global South. The role will also lead on UP’s public affairs and government relations plans and activities. It will have a key role in delivery of work in this area including external relationship management across the UK and Welsh governments, and key partners such as Cardiff City Council, as well as in international institutions such UN bodies. The role will also help underpin the communications aspects of potential partnerships in other donor countries – as well as ensuring support to UP’s country programmes across the world.  They will provide support and counsel to the CEO, senior team and others acting as spokespeople for the organisation in events, the media and social media  – as well as being able to act as an external spokesperson for UP when required. The postholder will relish shaping, building and delivering a new strategy and team in an organisation with high ambition and aspiration to shape and set agendas. They will need drive, determination, creativity and ambition to make things happen – with proven team management experience. Able to range across developing or fixing some basic foundations of organisational communications infrastructure through to creative and agenda-setting initiatives to reflect the new brand UP is building, they will need to be able to deliver results and impact. They will need to have a proven ability to engage with and communicate issues relevant to UP’s organisational strategy across international development, innovation and social change – though a specific background in international development is not essential. With a good nose for news, social media trends and the political / communications zeitgeist, they will need to show they can command oversight of the commissioning, writing and production of inspiring, creative and compelling content for a wide range of audiences and channels. They should also have a proven ability to develop relationships and secure influence with policymakers, decision-makers and stakeholders in areas such as business, academia and the worlds of innovation and new technology, together with enthusiasm to support UP’s income-generating strategies. With an entrepreneurial, go-getting mind-set they will also need to be able to work across a wide range of cultural and political contexts reflecting UP’s international presence.
